What Is an Erasmus+ Inter-Institutional Agreement?

An Erasmus+ Inter-Institutional Agreement (IIA) is an official cooperation agreement concluded between two higher education institutions to facilitate student and staff mobility activities.

Erasmus+ Student Mobility for Studies and Staff Mobility for Teaching must be carried out under a valid inter-institutional agreement covering the relevant mobility period.

Inter-institutional agreements may be established at faculty, department, academic programme or field-of-study level. These agreements generally include the following information:

  • Academic field and ISCED code,
  • Study cycle,
  • Student and staff mobility quotas,
  • Types and duration of mobility activities,
  • Language of instruction and language proficiency requirements,
  • Validity period of the agreement,
  • Contact details of the partner higher education institutions.

Partner higher education institutions located in countries associated with the Erasmus+ Programme must hold a valid Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE).

The validity periods, academic fields, study cycles and mobility quotas covered by the agreements may vary. The existence of an inter-institutional agreement does not necessarily mean that student or staff mobility places will be available during every academic year.

Applicants must therefore check the current partner institution, department and quota information published in the relevant Erasmus+ call for applications before submitting their applications.

Digital Management of Inter-Institutional Agreements

Erasmus+ inter-institutional agreements are prepared and mutually approved by the partner higher education institutions through digital systems compatible with the Erasmus Without Paper (EWP) infrastructure.

The creation of agreements in the digital system, communication with partner institutions, determination of the agreement conditions, completion of the approval process and official record-keeping are managed by the Ankara Science University Erasmus Coordination Office.

Academic staff members and departmental Erasmus coordinators are not required to create separate system accounts or directly manage digital agreement procedures.

Academic proposals for establishing cooperation with a new institution may be submitted to the Erasmus Coordination Office in accordance with the process explained on the New Erasmus+ Inter-Institutional Agreement Request page.

ISCED Field Codes

ISCED Field Codes are used for the international classification of education and training fields. Erasmus+ inter-institutional agreements must indicate the relevant ISCED code corresponding to the department, academic programme or field of education covered by the agreement.
