Students who enroll at our university at the beginning of the academic year take the English Proficiency (Preparatory Class Exemption) Exam. Students who fail this exam are placed in the English Preparatory Program at the level appropriate to their foreign language proficiency.
(There will be no make-up exam for the English Proficiency Exam administered at the beginning of the academic year.)
English preparatory education, in order, begins with Basic (A level)[Basic (A2), Upper Basic (A2+)], Intermediate (B level) [Pre-Intermediate (B1) and Intermediate (B1+)] levels are comprised of two levels.
Students who score 0 – 29 on the English Proficiency Exam are placed in the Basic group (A level); students who score 30 – 59 are placed in the Intermediate group (B level).
It is planned that all levels will reach the same level (B1+) after a one-year preparatory education. In this case, students in the A track will complete four levels in one year, and students in the B track will complete two levels in one year.
At the beginning of the fall and spring semesters, the education/training period is planned as 14 (fourteen) weeks + one week of exams.
In the A track, the Basic (A2) and Upper Basic (A2+) levels are completed during the first 14 weeks of education/training; the Pre-Intermediate (B1) and Intermediate (B1+) levels are completed during the second 14-week education/training period. A level groups take at least 24 (twenty-four) hours of English preparatory classes per week.
B level: Pre-Intermediate (B1) level is completed in the first 14 weeks of education/training, and Intermediate (B1+) level is completed in the second 14 weeks of education/training. B level groups take at least 20 (twenty) hours of English preparatory classes per week.
Translation and Interpreting Department A separate group is opened for students who score between 60-79 on the English Proficiency Exam, and they receive instruction at the B1+ level. The year-end target for this group only is B2+. Like other B-level students, they take at least 20 hours of instruction per week.
Students who successfully complete the spring semester are eligible to take the end-of-term English Proficiency Exam. Students who pass the English Proficiency Exam have completed their English preparatory education. Students who fail the proficiency exam can retake the English Proficiency Exam at the beginning of the next semester or retake it by attending Summer School.
Students who fail the Spring semester may also attend Summer School.
Students who wish to object to their exam results during their studies are required to submit their applications to the English Preparatory Unit assistant coordinator via petition within five (5) business days following the announcement of the results. Objections are evaluated within two (2) business days.
