According to Article 20 of the Constitution, “Everyone has the right to the protection of personal data concerning themselves. This right includes the right to be informed about personal data concerning oneself, to access this data, to request its correction or deletion, and to learn whether it is being used in accordance with its intended purposes. Personal data may only be processed in cases stipulated by law or with the explicit consent of the individual. The principles and procedures regarding the protection of personal data shall be regulated by law.” In line with this constitutional provision, the Law No. 6698 on the Protection of Personal Data (KVKK) was published in the Official Gazette on April 7, 2016, and entered into force. Regulations and board decisions, which constitute derivative legislation for the implementation of the law, have also been published. This law aims to protect the fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals, primarily the right to privacy, in the processing of personal data, and to regulate the obligations of natural and legal persons processing personal data, as well as the procedures and principles they must comply with.
